Announcing Our Halloween Celebration Contest

Meg Eastman: I love to take a fun halloween twist on pigs-in-a-blanket by turning them into mummies.  They're always the highlight of the buffet table.  

Take cocktail wieners (Lil' Smokies) and wrap them in thin strips of crescent roll dough like a mummy.  Leave a small gap in the wrapping for some spicy brown mustard eyes.  Bake according to package instructions for the crescent rolls.  Add eyes (ketchup also works well) and enjoy!  Hint:  to get long thin strips of dough try cutting it with a pizza wheel.

Holly Barratt: I love to celebrate Halloween and try to make ordinary treats special.For instance if I am giving out tootsie roll lollipops, I place a tissue over them, tie at the lollipop base. Then put black dots for eyes and a dot for  a mouth! Viola a ghost pop! For packs of lifesavers, I string several strands of black and orange yarn thru them and tie at the ends. Festive wrappings. Anything to make the holiday happier!

Kelly Givens: My favorite Halloween activity is putting together a mini haunted house. Put out peeled grapes for eyeballs, cooked spaghetti for brains, and candy corn for fingernails. It is just the right amount of gross for the kiddies!

Teresa Pullium: Here's a quick and easy way to make some mummy cookies this Halloween. Take gingerbread men (preferably from Ukrops!) and using white cake decorating icing (royal icing in a piping bag), zig-zag the icing back and forth across the cookies to give them the appearance of a mummy. The royal icing will harden as it dries so you can wrap them in clear cellophane treat bags.

To make royal icing:
4 egg whites
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon lemon extract

Beat egg whites in clean, large bowl with mixer at high speed until foamy. Gradually add sugar and lemon extract. Beat at high speed until thickened.

Suzanne Heitmuller: I like to make Ice Cream Witches!  The kids love them for dessert on Halloween.  Take 1 round scoop of ice cream, top with an upside down sugar cone, use round candies for the eyes and nose and a little decorating gel for the mouth.  You can also use a few licorice strings for hair.  Very cute, very simple (so even the littlest goblin can join in) and fun.  Last year we had an ice cream party with a bunch of different ice creams and candies.  Everyone decorated their own witch and had a great time eating them all up!  "I'll get you my pretty!"

Brenda Morris: I like to make ghost cookies!  The family gets together to make these cookies each year, they are fun, delicious and easy to make!  All you need is one package of Nutter Butter Peanut Butter cookies and 1 pound of almond bar, and a few minature chocolate chips.  Coarsely chop up the almond bark and melt in microwave.  Dip Nutter Butter Peanut Butter cookie in the melted almond bark and cover completely (use tooth picks poked into the filling).  Place on waxed paper lined cookie sheet and add two mini chocoloate chips as eyes. Continue until all cookies are covered.  Cool completely and see how quickly they disappear!!!  Happy Halloween!!!!!

Steve Tross: Take a medium size pumpkin and clean all the seeds/guts out. Fill with Bud Lite Wheat and put lid on. Place in fridge over night. Next day take off lid and scoop out the best FRESH pumpkin beer!!!!!!!

Stacy D: We always have a Halloween feast before trick or treating.  I use Halloween themed paper goods to eat on, which is both festive and keeps me from having dishes to wash before trick or treat time.  (I usually stock up on these in early November and pack them away with my Halloween decorations.)  Make healthy sandwiches of your choice and cut with ghost cookie cutters (or you could even do the same with pizza). Orange juice is a healthy way to fit into the color scheme, and black olives make a good side.  A combination of favorite Halloween recipes rounds out the feast.  For us, that involves peanut butter cracker spiders with raisin eyes and pumpkin pie.

Sarah Curtis: Our favorite Halloween celebration is a pumpkin carving party! We get the whole extended family together to carve. There's nothing funnier than watching the kids faces when they rip out the pumpkin "guts". When we're finished we light them all and take a big picture on the front porch of everyone with their pumpkins. And of course no celebration is complete without lots of Ukrop's goodies on the table!

genevelyn: Invite kids to decorate the house on Halloween in celebration of the Mexican holiday, the Day of The Dead, which is celebrated Nov.1st.  The Day of the Dead is a party in honor of the lives of departed  friends and family; it is not a gloomy affair, but rather, a celebration of the human spirit. This is a party for all ages.

Then, gather materials for your guests/kids to make an "altar" for the dead.
You'll need: 1. a box (or other large surface)covered with fabric
             2. candy, minitures, photos, flowers, incense, little bars of soap--these are offerings to the deceased.
             3. memento(s) of the deceased (ie, if the person was a writer, add a fountain pen to the altar)
             4. ask guests/kids to get creative and bring their own offerings and mememtos and to share the stories behind them
             5. Play upbeat music and provide treats

"Rosie" Tarkington: I am a senior adult; but, still enjoy having fun with children.  I decorate for all holidays.  For Halloween, I greet trick-or-treat doorbell ringers in a costume.  We have an 11 yr. old white toy poodle who also loves to have me dress him up for all holidays.  He poses for a picture in various settings and costumes and I send his greetings to friends via e-mail.  He has quite a fan club.  Having fun keeps me feeling young.

Martha Steger: I made these for my 2 granddaughters and their 3 friends (5 servings): Tricky Turnover Treats --Brown 1/2 lb. ground beef in skillet; stir in 1/4 cup minced onion, 1/4 cup French's prepared yellow mustard and 4 oz. Mozzarella cheese, cut into cubes.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until cheese melts.  Roll out each biscuit in 2 cans (8 oz. each) refrigerator buttermilk biscuits, with a rolling pin to a 3-inch circle.  Spoon ground-beef filling onto first 10 biscuits; cut pumpkin faces into remaining 10 biscuits that have been rolled into circles, and place over ground beef mixture, pressing edges of dough together to seal. To make stems for pumpkins, use the pieces of dough that were left from the face cut-outs.  Place on ungreased baking sheet; brush with one slightly beaten egg.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown.

Tabitha: I made a rats nest cake and donated it to the kids elementary school for the cake walk.  

I made a mini bunt cake. Frosted it with white icing, took Shredded Wheat cereal and crunched it up and place a runner rat on it! It was a HUGE hit!!

Jeanne Minetree: I copied this idea from a friend, so I can’t claim credit for it.  When my teenage son was too old to trick-or-treat yet still wanted the fun of participating in Halloween, he dressed as a monster and would sit limply propped against a tree near the front porch.  His costume completely covered him, so he looked like a life-size decoration.  He remained in that pose until trick-or-treaters had gotten their candy and were turning to leave.  Then he would start to move and stand up, surprising both the children and their parents.  Everyone had a good laugh, and my teenage son had a fun, safe Halloween.

Michele Delaney: Spooky Spider Cakes are great to make with munchkin chefs. Take a chocolate cupcake and pipe green vanilla pudding into the bottom of the cupcake. Frost cupcake completely with plenty of fudgy, chocolate frosting. Using six black Twizzlers that have been cut in half, create your spiders' legs. Use Red Hots for the eyes, chocolate sprinkles for lady spider eyelashes, and black decorator's gel for the mouth. This is a real crowd pleaser and the kids have a fun time piping the icky green pudding into the cupcakes with Ziploc bags. A fun and somewhat realistic spooky treat!

PATTY GILL: My grandson and I love to get together for Halloween and make the goodies.  We use white chocolate covered pretzels (found in most candy isles) and use Oreos and white icing to make our little creatures!  Use a little of the white icing on the white covered pretzel and stick this to the bottom of an oreo to make the creatures legs.  Next, put two small dots of white icing on top of the oreo and place mini m&m for the eyes.  Kids love to show their creations!

Elaine Ewing Spangler: I also like to make the mummy dogs, have cherry koolaid (which we refer to as Vampire Juice), Make Mummy faced pizza.  You take a bagel cut in half, spread sauce on each half,  Take your cheese and leave an opening for the mouth where the sauce shows through, olives for eyes or cut up pepperoni into small eyes.  Bake for 10 mins at 400 degrees.  We also will fix french fries but refers to them as fingers and dip them in Vampire sauce (ketchup)

Elizabeth S.: One of our favorite family activities during the month of October has been to 'haunt' our friends and neighbors by leaving a plate or tin of homemade pumpkin-shaped cookies on their porch, ringing the doorbell and running.  We include a paper with a figure of a cute ghost, and an anonymous note that instructs them to leave the ghost in a window so that other neighbors know they've already been haunted.  We also leave an extra note and ghost for them to use if they want to haunt someone else in turn.  It was great fun seeing all the ghosts go up in the windows of the neighborhood and know the fun was being passed on.

Carmen Dixon: We enjoy making our yard very spooky on Halloween. Take a large white plastic kitchen bag and with a magic marker draw a large scary face on one side. Then get a large black leaf bag, clip the top corners about an inch or 2 with scissors. Now tape the edges of the white bag on the side of the black bag. Take a leaf blower and securely tape the opening of the black bag with duct tape over the outlet. Place between shrubs with an extention cord leading into a front window. When you want to scare someone, plug it in. The unexpected noise of the leaf blower, as it fills the leaf bag causes the scary white face to sway back and forth, is really something to scream about.

Linda Richmond: Our children are grown but still love spider web brownies for Halloween.  Bake your favorite brownie recipe or box mix on a pizza pan.   Frost with white icing.   Starting from the center out make a spiral with black or brown gel icing (in the small tube that you use to write on cakes).  Then pull a toothpick from the center out (like spokes) to create the spider web.  Add plastic spiders to the web and you have an quick and easy Halloween treat.

Sean Danyluk: Jack O' Burgers: Any type of hamburger, turkey burger, etc.  Then take a slice of cheese (American Yellow)and cut faces into the cheese. Melt the cheese on the burger so it will hold.  Then serve.  The kids can cut there own faces.

Stephannie H: To make easy spider-web cupcakes, make chocolate cupcakes and put white icing on them.  Then, get a tube of black cake decorating gel. Make sure it is the gel, this comes in a small tube, not the big tubes of decorative icing.  Take the gel and put a dot in the center of the icing, then put 3 or 4 circles around the dot working towards the edge.  Then take a toothpick, start in the center at the dot, and drag the toothpick across the icing in a straight line to the edge.  Go to the center again, rotate the cupcake slightly, drag the toothpick to the edge again.  Do this over and over until you have a spider web.  Insert a plastic spider ring to top it off.

Peggy: Halloween is one of my very favorite holidays!  I love decorating inside and outside our home and I really enjoy making special treats for our family and friends who visit us on Halloween evening.  One of our spooky, and easy, favorites are Peanut Butter Eyeballs.  For this recipe, you will need: 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter; 3 tbsp. softened butter; 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar; 1 tsp. vanilla extract; 6 oz. white chocolate candy coating; 1 small bag M&Ms and red decorator frosting.
In the bowl with a mixer, blend peanut butter and butter until creamy. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla and continue beating until it looks like a thick cookie dough.
Using a spoon, scoop out balls of peanut butter candy and roll between your palms to get them as round as possible. Place them on the cookie sheet and put them in a refrigerator or freezer for at least 30 minutes.
In separate bowls, melt the white chocolate coatings in the microwave. Stir after every minute until it is smooth throughout. Use two forks to dip the peanut butter balls into the chocolate coating.
While the chocolate is still wet, press an M&M candy in the center for the iris. Return the eyes to the refrigerator to harden. Use the red decorator frosting to make squiggly blood vessels. The eyeballs look really scarey and taste delicious. Happy Halloween!!

missy taylor: ok yall i have a great one.... take hot dogs cut them in half, then cut the halves in half, then you boil all your cut up hot dogs til done. then you drain your hot dogs and put in a bowl and you have worm hot dogs they really look like worms!!! you have got to try this one, it is great

Trisha Wash: I have a girlfriends "Convening of the Witches" party every year, and we all dress up - this year was the 5th Annual.  One of the girls has a birthday on October 29, so we have to have a birthday cake.  This year I made a spider cake using Betty Crocker yellow butter cake mix and Ukrop's chocolate fudge icing.  I made the body of the spider by using my large Pyrex bowl and the head using a small Pyrex bowl.  I used red M&Ms for the eyes, Tootsie Rolls for the legs and chocolate sprinkles to make it look hairy.  I wish I could post pictures!!!
